The new Children's Centre at Rye Oak School is the first Southwark Children's Centre to be integrated into a primary school, and represents significant investment in the modernisation of the school itself, providing a new front entrance and visitor reception area, office accommodation, a new staff room, upgraded kitchen and teaching spaces with a creche to enable parents to attend training sessions. It also provides disabled access to the whole school for the first time, by insertion of a lift in the original Victorian Building.
The new building uses cross laminated timber construction (recycling wood from the furniture industry), a ground source heat pump, natural ventilation, intelligent lighting and a green roof. It is expected to achieve a BREAAM 'Very Good' rating.
